Swag Talk: Essentials For A Woman’s Wardrobe

We’ll help you navigate the women’s fashion world with a few key pieces you need now.

1. Signature ring/necklace/bracelet – I’m a big fan of wearing one or two pieces of jewelry consistently, no matter what other accessory I may be pairing with my outfit. I wear the same thin gold bracelet and gold Louis Vuitton chain-link ring every day because they have special meaning to me. They’re understated, but I still get complimented on them constantly. Not only do they look nice on, they’re conversation pieces for anyone who asks me about them. I know a few other girls that wear a signature ring/piece of jewelry daily, and like me, they’ve become part of our ‘look.’

2. Nice purse – if you plan on investing money in one wardrobe item, I’d suggest you spend the big bucks on either a nice purse or a nice pair of heels that will transition you from day-to-night. For me, a woman’s shoes and her purse are the first two things that I look at – they’re usually the item that can make or break an outfit. As far as brands go, I suggest to get the best possible bag that’s in your price range – whatever that may be. Go for something that isn’t too overly-trendy (i.e, no fringe, embellishments, etc), instead opt for a bag in a nice size that will last you throughout the different seasons.

3. Flowing summer dress – this category was Kadeem’s suggestion, and I couldn’t agree more. Dresses are so feminine, so flirty (I hate that word but it fits so well), the perfect summer uniform. Dresses have the power of accentuating your best features while camouflaging those you aren’t so confident about. I’m a huge fan of the high-low (or ‘tail hem’) dresses that became hot this spring/summer season, as well as dresses with classy cutouts. I also love maxi dresses (probably not a favorite for the guy population), as they’re easy to wear and can add the illusion of height.

A few dresses I like from Nastygal.com

4. Blazers– I can’t stress enough the importance that blazers play in my wardrobe. I can guarantee that if you were to run into me on the street (especially during breezy weather), you’d see me in either a blazer or some sort of leather jacket. I’m absolutely obsessed with them – they polish off your look and instantly make you look more sophisticated. I have blazers in all different colors and textures (usually from Zara), and basically cannot live without them. When fitted properly and to the length of your choice (I like mine a little longer since I’m tall), they can be very chic and the perfect addition to an outfit. Whether you’re wearing a dress, pants, or shorts, a blazer is always appropriate.

5. Signature scent – ok, this isn’t exactly a wardrobe item, but it’s a must. A nice scent is vital to a good first impression, let alone a lasting one. A person’s perfume/cologne is one of their most memorable qualities for me – Kadeem agrees. My personal favorite is Chloé’s signature fragrance; it’s not overly sweet or strong and doesn’t smell like some dessert topping (gross) – two things I think you should stay away from! I’ve also worn several Dior fragrances in the past, which were also nice but weren’t as “me” as Chloé is. Take your time finding a fragrance that you like and suits you.

6. Heels – I don’t think much needs to be said in this category! However uncomfortable some of them may be, heels are undeniably sexy and a wardrobe-must, especially if you enjoy going out. As I said before, a woman’s shoes and her purse are among the first things I notice about her – make sure what’s on your feet are worth looking at! Stilettos are classic, while platform heels have recently made their way back into the forefront of women’s footwear (just make sure the ones you’re eyeing don’t look cheap, as this can happen easily with this style), and strappy heels are very feminine and great for summer months. Wedges are always a great daytime option, as they’re the most comfortable heels you could possibly wear. Again, as with purses, purchase the best possible heels within your budget…a ratchet shoe can turn a perfectly nice outfit into something not so nice.

Let it be known, however, that if you cannot walk in heels, don’t embarrass yourself hobbling down the street, unable to keep your ankles straight. There is nothing worse than seeing a woman who can’t walk in the shoes she’s wearing. You may need to add either an insert into your shoe to help stabilize your ankle, or opt for a chunkier/thicker heel for added support.

7. Perfectly fitting jeans – you’ve seen the woman with the muffin top cascading over her too-tight jeans. You’ve also seen the woman with the baggy backside constantly pulling her pants up. Neither are good looks. Make sure all of your denim – whether colored, coated, textured, skinny, legging, etc – fits properly. I try to wear J Brand or rag & bone jeans because they have the perfect amount of stretch in all the right places, as well as the best washes/colors and quality. I haven’t found that with other brands that I’ve tried – I tend to need a little bit more stretch in the *ahem* posterior region but a true fit in the rest of the jean – both brands fit me well as-is without needing to do any sort of alteration. Don’t try and squeeze yourself into the size that you’d like to think you are (I’m sure we’ve all tried this once or twice), and make sure to ask a salesperson if the jeans you’re about to purchase have a tendency to stretch or shrink; in that case, you may need to buy a size up or down. When you walk through that door, it’s how you look in the jeans, not the size on the tag.

The Evolution Of The Color Pink

Remember when men wouldn’t wear pink at all? That mentality has changed drastically today. I won’t entirely attribute this dynamic change to Cam’ron when he tried to make pink everyone’s new favorite color by showcasing a Pink Range Rover, a pink Mink, pink cell phone and many other items that were coated in the typically feminine color.

However he was clearly one of the leaders of the pink wave. Some men nowadays may a thing or two to say to you if you’re afraid to wear the color pink, or still have a flawed mentality about this color. It seems as if pink has now become  a way for a man to show just how ‘manly’ he is, or how uninterested he is with the opinions of the masses – but it definitely wasn’t like this before.

Before this revolution had even started, pink was seen as the forbidden color for men to wear. Some people saw it as a color that wasn’t masculine, a color that shouldn’t be worn by the male gender.  To me, all those people who saw it in that light were rather ignorant and insensible with insecurities. Me being the person I am, I was never and will never be afraid to wear any color that I desire to put on.

I feel like some people are just so wrapped up in meeting the standards of a community that they hold themselves back from being who they are – not only when it comes to fashion, but with so many other things. I feel like everyone should be fearless in what they wear if they like something and want it to be a part of their style. In my opinion, when I chose to wear pink garments – such as a button-down or a blazer – I feel like I actually look a cut above other people who choose to wear colors that aren’t really scrutinized by their peers and the public. Sound off!

Why Are Timberland Boots Still Relevant?

Other than being utilized for winter conditions, I don’t see why people  choose to wear a pair of Timbs on a regular day. In my opinion, they’re really heavy and bulky and very tough to walk in. I’ve only had one pair and I didn’t enjoy the shoe but I’m not like everyone. Some people have different likes and they may just love that shoe, and I can’t knock that, but still it puzzles me.

Another thing is I never understood why celebrities choose to wear them to an event, to a concert, in a music video or a party. They have so much money and to see them in a pairs of Timbs to me, it’s somewhat a downgrade. It’s like you’re given a Lamborghini to drive but you choose to pick a Ford truck; maybe I don’t see what they see in the shoe. Maybe it’s more than just a shoe to them, maybe it represents a certain aspect of their culture, or where they grew up it maybe symbolized something. This may be the case as Wale represented for his city with the Nike Boots anthem a few years ago.

It surely brings out a very edgy, gritty and rough side to someone’s style and it can definitely add some unexpected flair to an outfit ala Kanye West back when he had a handful of Amber Rose. This I must agree with for sure.

Maybe one day I can get to interview someone such as Fabolous or even a Jay-Z and tap into their mind about the phenomenon of these shoes, until then I will keep on searching for the answer. Sound off!

Swag Talk: Zara Suits

If you’re in need of a dapper outfit for a special occasion, look no further – Zara’s men’s suiting collection will take you to very fashionable heights. As you probably know by now, I’m a huge fan of Zara. In my opinion, their quality and sophisticated design reign supreme compared to many other retailers – it’s also not a secret that Zara has a knack for taking luxury designer looks and making them their own for a much lesser cost. Zara’s men’s line in general is very sophisticated and European – it takes a certain person to carry that look off, and is definitely not to everyone’s taste – but their suiting is definitely worth stopping in to check out.

I’m a huge fan of suits – they’re kind of my weakness. They’re universally flattering (for the most part), and generally make every guy look his best. I love the classic black-&-white-suit-with-slim-black-tie combination, but then again I can’t say that well-fitting suits in general aren’t nice to look at. Here are some of my favorites from Zara’s online store, anywhere from $150 – $250ish:

Some of Zara’s best in suiting.

I definitely recommend stopping by Zara for your next suit – make sure you get the right fit! Baggy suits are a no-no.

Trend Watch: Comic Book Fashion

Comic books have influenced Fall fashion in a major way thanks to 3.1 Phillip Lim. I definitely want to get my hands on a thing or two from this trend.

3.1 Phillip Lim is paying homage to the classic “The Break Up” comic in their latest collection; below are some of the items available on Net-a-Porter. The pieces are bright, serving as the perfect pop of color and conversation piece for your outfit.

While looking over SoleStruck the other day for my post on the Jeffrey Campbell ‘Cleata’ shoe, I came across this Black Milk x Jeffrey Campbell collaboration, which features comic book-print heels. Black Milk is the Australian brand responsible for the majority of those galactic-print leggings, swimsuits, bodysuits, dresses, and other accessories you’ve seen in that recent outer-space trend. I think it’s safe to say that Jeffrey Campbell needs no introduction at this point, but the combination of the two was much-anticipated and highly lucrative.

My favorites are the Night Lita, Damsel and the Lita Fab, all featured in the “Sick of Men” comic print. I definitely think this is a trend and collaboration worth indulging in.

What do you think of this trend? These shoes?

The What-Not’s-To-Wear Of The Winter: Footwear Edition

I came up with a list of some fashion items that will be worn in the winter although they probably shouldn’t. The death of these trends is the main reason as to why they shouldn’t be worn. This list has been a long time coming, and I’m sure you may disagree or agree with some of the items. Feel free to let me know what you think.

  • Uggs

You probably saw this one coming, as its surely time for people – mainly women – to start retiring this boot. Uggs have had an exceptional run and seen a lot of success for a while now. The numbers of people that I have seen wearing these boots are incredible – they were one of the biggest trends in the last few years but it’s time to hang them up. One main reason for this is the frequent use of Ugg boots in the summer. Come on, it’s already so hot and then you have the audacity on top of that to wear boots? I don’t get it, and it’s not justified by the shoe being so comfortable. It’s okay to wear them from time to time, but I can’t deal with seeing these boots everyday anymore.

  • Nike Boots

Next up we have the Nike Air Max Goadome Boot better known as the Nike Boot. Yes this shoe is very durable, yes it is ideal for winter conditions, and yes it will help you survive in the snow but it’s time to say goodbye to them. These are another victim when it comes to people abusing this shoe and using them all throughout the year. These shoes are so bulky, they aren’t really attractive or stylish and they remind me of a tank. I think there are many more options out there when it comes to boots, people just have to explore. To many, the meaning of these shoes to DC natives is unknown – for this I believe they should be the only ones who still have license to wear these shoes.

  • Toms

I don’t even know why I should have to put these on the list but it’s necessary. Last winter I saw so many people wearing their Toms in the winter and I never understood why. Were they trying to make the trend last longer? Were they trying to be a winter trendsetter? Or were just being lazy to put on suitable shoes for the colder conditions? I don’t have the answers for these questions but I can surely say that these shouldn’t be worn in the winter. They don’t protect your feet from anything, nor do they keep your feet warm – imagine how silly you would look with wet Toms on your feet. This is strictly a summer shoe. I understand that I don’t set any rules or standards, but I truly feel like they shouldn’t be worn in low temperature conditions at all.

Sound off.

Fashion Individuality

What is it to be an individual? It is for you to be yourself. With that being said when related to fashion, it’s the same blueprint. Be yourself and be beautiful. With so many trends and pressures in the fashion world, it gets difficult for some people to truly tap into their fashion individuality. People struggle at times with distinguishing between what they really want to wear and their fear of looking up-to-date with trends. In these moments, you must put your fashion creativity and style on full display. People don’t get paid to wear trends, so why waste your money on things that you don’t fit your style, when you can wear what you actually like?

At the end of the day, some people are afraid to be ridiculed if they decide to wear something that might not be “in” at the moment. People care too much about someone else’s opinion when it comes to fashion. Sure, you might get a few looks while you walk down the street wearing an outlandish outfit – but that doesn’t mean you should be afraid to wear what your heart is telling you to. It’s only when you accept this that you truly become one with your style.

Someone may be able to say that your style is terrible or spectacular but at the end of the day, who are they to speak? We all have likes and dislikes when it comes to other people’s fashion (let alone our own), but who cares? There is no one out there in the world that knows exactly what’s stylish and what isn’t. People only have opinions but everyone has originality. Delve into yourself to figure out your fashion style, and then grace the world with it.

My Picks: [Faux] Leather Leggings

As a result of my undying love for leather and leggings, I deemed it critical to share with you some of my favorite faux & genuine leather leggings of the season.

This pair screams “I’m inappropriate for most daytime settings” and I love that about them. I love anything that seems like it would be difficult to wear during the day time, worn in the day time. Pair these with a nude heel/sandal and a neutral blazer and you’d be transported to Chicville in no time. I absolutely love these, and see no reason for them not to mysteriously appear in my closet.

Paige Denim ‘Paloma’ Leather Legging

Though they’re on the more expensive side, this pair of Paige leggings is made of genuine leather rather than the faux variety. What I love about this pair is that they’re both fashionable and functional – a party in the front and all-business in the back, so to speak, because they’re made of both leather and knit spandex (in the back). These are the most practical leather leggings you could buy, as they’ll conform better to your shape (thanks to the spandex) while still looking like an all-leather legging from the front. What’s not to love about that?!

AG Adriano Goldschmied Faux-Leather Leggings

The perfect, sexy-but-classic faux leather legging courtesy of AG. Completely on-trend yet still animal friendly, this faux-leather legging is pretty much the best wardrobe staple you could have in your closet this Fall. I’m not personally familiar with the fit of AG jeans, but I’ve heard the sizing can be tricky at times, so be sure to try this pair on in person rather than ordering them online.

J Brand Jeans ‘L8001 Cognac Leather Super Skinny Pants’

The absolutely gorgeous but fiscally unrealistic J Brand Cognac leather pant is definitely a lust of mine. At almost $1,000 (when you include tax), they’re not something I’ll be able to purchase but are beautiful and a must-have nonetheless. This ruddy brown leather is so easy-on-the-eyes, feminine and easy to integrate into a neutral colored outfit that it’s a shame this pair is so expensive. With a soft oatmeal-colored oversized sweater and some short booties? I’d be in heaven.

Parker Faux Leather Pant in Teal

I absolutely love how this pair of Parker teal faux-leather leggings was styled – in an earthy yet glamorous, muted but flashy way. This pair would seamlessly transition you from a chic day look to a great going-out outfit, and would probably end up expanding your wardrobe in a very big way. With sweaters or dainty tops like the one on the model, this Parker pair is a must-have.

Is the Swag Right? Venus Bustier and Maxi Dress

Nasty Gal has recently released their holiday collection which includes the Venus Bustier and the Venus Maxi Dress – letting you to show a little skin even in the chilly weather.

Mixing mod and vintage shapes, the Venus Bustier and Venus Maxi Dress take cutouts and skin-showing to another level.

I love the way the Venus Maxi Dress ($148) in white looks on the blonde model. However, I definitely don’t think this is a look for everyone. Anyone with too big of a chest – or too little – might have a difficult time carrying this off, but then again if you can rock it well, more power to you.  I think I would get the Bustier ($78) because it’s a little more versatile, and would show off the abs that I may or may not be working on for the future warmer months.

The Venus Maxi Dress is available in white and black, exclusively at Nasty Gal. The Venus Bustier is available in black only.

Look out for a breakdown of the entire Nasty Gal Holiday Collection soon.
