Why Are Timberland Boots Still Relevant?

Other than being utilized for winter conditions, I don’t see why people  choose to wear a pair of Timbs on a regular day. In my opinion, they’re really heavy and bulky and very tough to walk in. I’ve only had one pair and I didn’t enjoy the shoe but I’m not like everyone. Some people have different likes and they may just love that shoe, and I can’t knock that, but still it puzzles me.

Another thing is I never understood why celebrities choose to wear them to an event, to a concert, in a music video or a party. They have so much money and to see them in a pairs of Timbs to me, it’s somewhat a downgrade. It’s like you’re given a Lamborghini to drive but you choose to pick a Ford truck; maybe I don’t see what they see in the shoe. Maybe it’s more than just a shoe to them, maybe it represents a certain aspect of their culture, or where they grew up it maybe symbolized something. This may be the case as Wale represented for his city with the Nike Boots anthem a few years ago.

It surely brings out a very edgy, gritty and rough side to someone’s style and it can definitely add some unexpected flair to an outfit ala Kanye West back when he had a handful of Amber Rose. This I must agree with for sure.

Maybe one day I can get to interview someone such as Fabolous or even a Jay-Z and tap into their mind about the phenomenon of these shoes, until then I will keep on searching for the answer. Sound off!

Swag Talk: Zara Suits

If you’re in need of a dapper outfit for a special occasion, look no further – Zara’s men’s suiting collection will take you to very fashionable heights. As you probably know by now, I’m a huge fan of Zara. In my opinion, their quality and sophisticated design reign supreme compared to many other retailers – it’s also not a secret that Zara has a knack for taking luxury designer looks and making them their own for a much lesser cost. Zara’s men’s line in general is very sophisticated and European – it takes a certain person to carry that look off, and is definitely not to everyone’s taste – but their suiting is definitely worth stopping in to check out.

I’m a huge fan of suits – they’re kind of my weakness. They’re universally flattering (for the most part), and generally make every guy look his best. I love the classic black-&-white-suit-with-slim-black-tie combination, but then again I can’t say that well-fitting suits in general aren’t nice to look at. Here are some of my favorites from Zara’s online store, anywhere from $150 – $250ish:

Some of Zara’s best in suiting.

I definitely recommend stopping by Zara for your next suit – make sure you get the right fit! Baggy suits are a no-no.

What do you think of these suits? Let me know in the comments section.

Trend Watch: Comic Book Fashion

Comic books have influenced Fall fashion in a major way thanks to 3.1 Phillip Lim. I definitely want to get my hands on a thing or two from this trend.

3.1 Phillip Lim is paying homage to the classic “The Break Up” comic in their latest collection; below are some of the items available on Net-a-Porter. The pieces are bright, serving as the perfect pop of color and conversation piece for your outfit.

While looking over SoleStruck the other day for my post on the Jeffrey Campbell ‘Cleata’ shoe, I came across this Black Milk x Jeffrey Campbell collaboration, which features comic book-print heels. Black Milk is the Australian brand responsible for the majority of those galactic-print leggings, swimsuits, bodysuits, dresses, and other accessories you’ve seen in that recent outer-space trend. I think it’s safe to say that Jeffrey Campbell needs no introduction at this point, but the combination of the two was much-anticipated and highly lucrative.

Black Milk x Jeffrey Campbell comic book-print heels at SoleStruck.

My favorites are the Night Lita, Damsel and the Lita Fab, all featured in the “Sick of Men” comic print. I definitely think this is a trend and collaboration worth indulging in.

What do you think of this trend? These shoes?

The What-Not’s-To-Wear Of The Winter: Footwear Edition

I came up with a list of some fashion items that will be worn in the winter although they probably shouldn’t. The death of these trends is the main reason as to why they shouldn’t be worn. This list has been a long time coming, and I’m sure you may disagree or agree with some of the items. Feel free to let me know what you think.

  • Uggs

You probably saw this one coming, as its surely time for people – mainly women – to start retiring this boot. Uggs have had an exceptional run and seen a lot of success for a while now. The numbers of people that I have seen wearing these boots are incredible – they were one of the biggest trends in the last few years but it’s time to hang them up. One main reason for this is the frequent use of Ugg boots in the summer. Come on, it’s already so hot and then you have the audacity on top of that to wear boots? I don’t get it, and it’s not justified by the shoe being so comfortable. It’s okay to wear them from time to time, but I can’t deal with seeing these boots everyday anymore.

  • Nike Boots

Next up we have the Nike Air Max Goadome Boot better known as the Nike Boot. Yes this shoe is very durable, yes it is ideal for winter conditions, and yes it will help you survive in the snow but it’s time to say goodbye to them. These are another victim when it comes to people abusing this shoe and using them all throughout the year. These shoes are so bulky, they aren’t really attractive or stylish and they remind me of a tank. I think there are many more options out there when it comes to boots, people just have to explore. To many, the meaning of these shoes to DC natives is unknown – for this I believe they should be the only ones who still have license to wear these shoes.

  • Toms

I don’t even know why I should have to put these on the list but it’s necessary. Last winter I saw so many people wearing their Toms in the winter and I never understood why. Were they trying to make the trend last longer? Were they trying to be a winter trendsetter? Or were just being lazy to put on suitable shoes for the colder conditions? I don’t have the answers for these questions but I can surely say that these shouldn’t be worn in the winter. They don’t protect your feet from anything, nor do they keep your feet warm – imagine how silly you would look with wet Toms on your feet. This is strictly a summer shoe. I understand that I don’t set any rules or standards, but I truly feel like they shouldn’t be worn in low temperature conditions at all.

Sound off.

Fashion Individuality

What is it to be an individual? It is for you to be yourself. With that being said when related to fashion, it’s the same blueprint. Be yourself and be beautiful. With so many trends and pressures in the fashion world, it gets difficult for some people to truly tap into their fashion individuality. People struggle at times with distinguishing between what they really want to wear and their fear of looking up-to-date with trends. In these moments, you must put your fashion creativity and style on full display. People don’t get paid to wear trends, so why waste your money on things that you don’t fit your style, when you can wear what you actually like?

At the end of the day, some people are afraid to be ridiculed if they decide to wear something that might not be “in” at the moment. People care too much about someone else’s opinion when it comes to fashion. Sure, you might get a few looks while you walk down the street wearing an outlandish outfit – but that doesn’t mean you should be afraid to wear what your heart is telling you to. It’s only when you accept this that you truly become one with your style.

Someone may be able to say that your style is terrible or spectacular but at the end of the day, who are they to speak? We all have likes and dislikes when it comes to other people’s fashion (let alone our own), but who cares? There is no one out there in the world that knows exactly what’s stylish and what isn’t. People only have opinions but everyone has originality. Delve into yourself to figure out your fashion style, and then grace the world with it.

My Picks: [Faux] Leather Leggings

As a result of my undying love for leather and leggings, I deemed it critical to share with you some of my favorite faux & genuine leather leggings of the season.

This pair screams “I’m inappropriate for most daytime settings” and I love that about them. I love anything that seems like it would be difficult to wear during the day time, worn in the day time. Pair these with a nude heel/sandal and a neutral blazer and you’d be transported to Chicville in no time. I absolutely love these, and see no reason for them not to mysteriously appear in my closet.

Paige Denim ‘Paloma’ Leather Legging

Though they’re on the more expensive side, this pair of Paige leggings is made of genuine leather rather than the faux variety. What I love about this pair is that they’re both fashionable and functional – a party in the front and all-business in the back, so to speak, because they’re made of both leather and knit spandex (in the back). These are the most practical leather leggings you could buy, as they’ll conform better to your shape (thanks to the spandex) while still looking like an all-leather legging from the front. What’s not to love about that?!

AG Adriano Goldschmied Faux-Leather Leggings

The perfect, sexy-but-classic faux leather legging courtesy of AG. Completely on-trend yet still animal friendly, this faux-leather legging is pretty much the best wardrobe staple you could have in your closet this Fall. I’m not personally familiar with the fit of AG jeans, but I’ve heard the sizing can be tricky at times, so be sure to try this pair on in person rather than ordering them online.

J Brand Jeans ‘L8001 Cognac Leather Super Skinny Pants’

The absolutely gorgeous but fiscally unrealistic J Brand Cognac leather pant is definitely a lust of mine. At almost $1,000 (when you include tax), they’re not something I’ll be able to purchase but are beautiful and a must-have nonetheless. This ruddy brown leather is so easy-on-the-eyes, feminine and easy to integrate into a neutral colored outfit that it’s a shame this pair is so expensive. With a soft oatmeal-colored oversized sweater and some short booties? I’d be in heaven.

Parker Faux Leather Pant in Teal

I absolutely love how this pair of Parker teal faux-leather leggings was styled – in an earthy yet glamorous, muted but flashy way. This pair would seamlessly transition you from a chic day look to a great going-out outfit, and would probably end up expanding your wardrobe in a very big way. With sweaters or dainty tops like the one on the model, this Parker pair is a must-have.

Is the Swag Right? Venus Bustier and Maxi Dress

Nasty Gal has recently released their holiday collection which includes the Venus Bustier and the Venus Maxi Dress – letting you to show a little skin even in the chilly weather.

Mixing mod and vintage shapes, the Venus Bustier and Venus Maxi Dress take cutouts and skin-showing to another level.

I love the way the Venus Maxi Dress ($148) in white looks on the blonde model. However, I definitely don’t think this is a look for everyone. Anyone with too big of a chest – or too little – might have a difficult time carrying this off, but then again if you can rock it well, more power to you.  I think I would get the Bustier ($78) because it’s a little more versatile, and would show off the abs that I may or may not be working on for the future warmer months.

The Venus Maxi Dress is available in white and black, exclusively at Nasty Gal. The Venus Bustier is available in black only.

Look out for a breakdown of the entire Nasty Gal Holiday Collection soon.

Vogue’s Anne Vincent for the Bellevue Collection Fashion Week

To many of us in the fashion industry, Vogue Magazine is the holy grail of our industry. They really are the fashion authority and going in to meet with Anne Vincent, Merchandising and Events Director for Vogue Magazine I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. To my delight, Anne is not only very chilled but is soft spoken and has a very friendly and gentle demeanor about her with an underlying air of authority. I came in and in her British accent she immediately commented on how she liked my necklace which instantly put me at ease.

Anne has been working on the fashion industry for 12 year in London and NY. She is here to produce and direct the Front Row Fashion Show presented by Vogue as part of the Bellevue Collection Fashion Week. The show which is taking place this Saturday night at the Hyatt in Bellevue is the biggest attraction for Fashion Week. I am lucky to get 30 minutes of Anne’s time to get a glimpse the preparations for Saturday’s show. She arrived the day before and had spent most of the day going to the mall’s stores to pull the looks for the show. After meeting with me, she was on her way to do a sound and visual check, follow by more store visits, meeting with hair and make-up and more fittings with models.

Here is our interview:

FF: Can you tell us a little bit about The Bellevue Collection Fashion Week and how the collaboration came about?

AV: It started 3 years ago because we wanted to enhance the Bellevue Collection Fashion Week experience. Give an amazing show with Bellevue Collection and Vogue Magazine.

FF: This is your third year coming out here, have you seen any changes in the fashion scene in our area? More interest? Bigger crowds?

AV: It has definitely grown; we had to change the layout of the venue to accommodate the growing crowd. Definitely there has been an added interest. People always dress up, it is Saturday night and it is a big show.

FF: What is your perception of Seattle-area fashion? Has it changed over the years?

AV: I have been coming here for the past 5-6 years for a number of different events and I have always found the women to be extremely stylish and have a high interest in fashion. I have seen more smaller boutiques come up and more interest in independent designers and up and coming designers. Fashion is more accessible now and you can watch the runway shows on the internet 20 minutes after they happen.

FF: What can we expect for the show this Saturday? Is it different from other years? And what is the vibe of the show?

AV: it is split into segments based on trends and the beauty of this show is that everything has been pulled from what is in the stores this week. What you see on the runway, you can purchase immediately.

We have amazing models from LA and Seattle, killer visuals and music, an amazing styling team. We have a variety of different trends for different looks from casual to daywear to formal. Clothing from great designers found at Nordstrom – Abby Ferrin, Cynthia Vincent and Haute Hippie. Clothing from Vince, Ellein Fisher, Anne Taylor, Report Shoes.

The vibe is high energy. We will show wearable clothes with a Vogue twist. Fashionably Fun Fashion!

FF: So who is on your styling team? And do you ever work with Seattle stylists?

AV: Lawrence Zarain. He is just did the Emmy Red Carpet in LA and he is a regular on Regis and Kelly and he is just flying to NYC to interview Vera Wang. He is very accomplished. Lawrence and I have an event on Saturday at the Center Court on the Bellevue Mall at 11am. It is the Fashion Forecast, which will be a sneak peak at the evening show but mostly we will give tips on how to update your wardrobe for the fall. It doesn’t take much, you don’t have to buy a whole new wardrobe, you can just add pieces to your existing wardrobe.

No, we haven’t had the pleasure to work with Seattle stylists.

FF: What are the biggest fall trends in fashion and beauty?

AV: Outerwear, especially for this area. Big parkas in army green color, you can wear them over jeans, dresses, leggings. Textured layering, tweets with wools with leather. 24/7 utility – we are calling it, great cargo pants, jeans, military jackets- resonate well with outdoor community but still stylish. Bags, Talbots has some amazing bags right now, skin bags and great shapes, colorful shoes.

For the show on Saturday, we will either do a really strong eye with nudes lips so that the eyes are really highlighted or we will do a bold red lips, there are many shades from bright red to an almost burgundy, with simple eyes. I haven’t really decided, yet, we will meet with hair and make-up and look at the clothes. In hair, a trend now is pony tails with your own hair wrapped around the pony tail. The other look is slicked/gelled back in the front and left natural/textured on the back.

FF: What is your 1# fashion tip?

AV: My biggest fashion tip is, that before you go shopping, really assess what you have in your closet because without fail, we always gravitate towards the same things and so we buy another black dress or things that we already have. Assess what you have and what you really need. You don’t have to get a new wardrobe; you can add smart accessories, bags, shoes.

FF: Any advice for anyone coming into the fashion industry?

AV: Work really hard with no attitude. Be willing and able to do anything and everything to get the job done. It is a big industry with many areas but you can get the experience, meet the right people and network-very important. My summer intern worked really hard for me all summer and she asked if she could come help me here for this show and I said yes, because she had worked really hard. So she is coming tomorrow from NY.

The Bellevue Collection Fashion Week is happening through Sunday. There are many fun fashion events happening, so check out their website and don’t miss the Vogue Front Row Show!

Back to School Essentials

Going back to school is always bittersweet. Summer is over and school stress slowly starts to pile on, but friends are reunited and there is no better place to showcase fall trends than at school. Sometimes the back to school trends can be confusing, so that’s why we’re here to make your first day back to school outfit easier to put together! Being Seattle-ites, it’s important for us to stay up to date on trends and looking stylish while still being able to dress for our unpredictable weather. Luckily for us, however, the end of August through September is the most beautiful time of the year, making getting dressed a breeze compared to those gross rainy days.

While it is important to be up-to-date on trends and look stylish, it is even more important to dress for yourself and have your own style. Sometimes at school it is easy for everyone to dress the same, resulting in teenage duplicates wandering down the halls. Hopefully after reading this article, you will know how to keep your own style while still incorporating the trends that work with your body shape, style, and personality. There is nothing more up-to-date and stylish than being yourself and having your own style.
Along with keeping up-to-date with magazines, another great way to get inspiration for back to school is to go on Lookbook.nu as well as Chictopia. Happy back to school shopping!

Outerwear
Every year there is one statement jacket that rules above all other pieces. This fall, it is the blazer. There is nothing more chic than a great fitting black blazer. To try something new, try a white blazer (they’re super in!) for those wanting to put a twist on the classic. There is also a boyfriend blazer (Urban Outfitter’s boyfriend blazer below) to tie in the masculine trend that is also in this fall. Lastly, for you risk takers, try a sequined, velvet, or silk blazer. All blazers look fantastic with a great pair of fitting jeans and a simple v-neck white t-shirt. There are numerous ways to wear a blazer, though. Try pairing it with your favorite frilly dress to give it an edge, or with a pair of high waist shorts to play up the preppy factor. There is nothing more flattering than a blazer, so in my opinion, you can never have too many; and plus, there are so many different colors and prints to buy them in!

Forever 21 classic black blazer $39.80

Tops
As far as tops go, the classic white v-neck is always in style. One trend to most definitely try is the denim on denim look. One thing about denim on denim is making sure they are different colors, otherwise, you’ll look like one big piece of fabric! Try a denim shirt with a pair of dark skinny jeans or pair it with a flow-y maxi/mini dress to make it more casual. Also, a great pencil skirt paired with a denim shirt and cute scarf is for sure to make a great outfit.

Ashley Olsen Sporting Denim on Denim

Jeans
Like every year, there is nothing more “in-style” than a great pair of jeans that fits your body type perfectly. A lot of times, teens can get caught up in trends and ignore what looks good on their bodies. While it can be fun to try new denim trends (like the 70’s inspired flare or the skinny colored denim) it is most important to buy jeans that flatter your figure and make you feel comfortable. Whether your “go-to” jeans are straight leg, skinny, boot-cut, cropped, or boyfriend, wear what is right for you. If the new denim trends work for your style and body, then take advantage of that and work them into your wardrobe!

LeAnn Rimes and Whitney Port wearing their colored denim (Whitney has the denim on denim trend spot on!)

Shoes
Shoes can make or break an outfit, which is why it is important to have shoes that are firstly comfortable for walking around in at school, and secondly, shoes that are in style and fit your personality. With all our rainy and cold weather it can be hard to avoid those comfy but oh-so overrated UGGS. Hopefully some of these options can help you! One trend that is in for shoes is the oxford/loafer look along with the relaxed Frye motorcycle boot. For those of you not afraid to walk around in heels, try a chunky heeled bootie or wedge. Of course, there is nothing more versatile and in style than a cute ballet flat in different colors and prints.

Accessories
Accessories are the place where you can have the most freedom in your outfits. While there are some trends to be familiar with, like layering bracelets and necklaces or wearing a cute fedora (try a dark brown or black one for fall!) to school, this is the place that identifies your style and personality most. Although it can be pricey, Chan Luu has great wrap leather bracelets and charm necklaces that can totally complete an out fit. A more economical place for jewelry is also Forever21, and they have some great pieces as well! Whether it’s a bright nail polish, chunky rings, or a deep plum wool scarf, wear what adds to your style but also try and incorporate the trends into your outfits for an up to date look.
